End of an Era for Lashings
The original Lashings Bar in the UK has now been renamed and we wish the new owners every success. The Maidstone institution was opened in 1976 by our owner Folby, gaining fame in the 1990s when it became a global name with its all star cricket team.
Lashings signed world famous batsman and former West Indies captain Sir Richie Richardson, along with Sir Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan.
Founder David Folb, who now lives in Jamaica with his wife Lisa and son Alec, said: "I saw today the name had changed and was quite emotional about it all. Wonderful memories of fun nights, local football, netball, rugby, pool and of course the cricket. I am proud of what we achieved in all sports especially football and cricket.
"I look back with fond and wonderful memories of truly great times and thank each and every customer over the years for helping make it an institution. Of course, the main person whom should receive the praise is [manager] John Tobin and he is still there.
"I wish the new owners well but cannot help feeling a little sad today.”
On Facebook former punters have also reacted to the change of name, with many declaring it the “end of an era”.
Sue Dunderdale said: "David, many many people had great times over the years at Lashings, including all us Dunders. We all felt safe out of the centre of town, being looked after by JT. An era many generations will never forget, including me."
Richard Coles said: "Many long nights keeping John Tobin on his toes with life long friends at Maidstone Rugby Club and The Mote cricket club. The first bar I ever went to with my dad following Lashings against the Maidstone teachers' side. Pretty sure Richie hit 100 plus at Cobham that evening. Memories of a special Jamaican hot shot after the game."
Mark Bristow said:" A groundbreaking independent business that put the town on the map in terms of sport and hospitality. They can change the name but they won't change the memories."
Robert Bounds said: "I remember working for the Kent Messenger and a sports reporter said 'Lashings have signed Richie Richardson'. We all laughed because it seemed preposterous (it was right at the start). Well the laugh was on us! The rest is history. You can be very proud of what you built."
